La Leche League Canada; Our Featured Charity for The Month of August

We were so happy to support La Leche League Canada, in honour of World Breastfeeding Week that falls within August.

As a mom that breastfed two kids into toddlerhood, I can attest to the challenges and difficulties firsthand. And these are no more pronounced than in those early weeks; when mom is recovering from birth, and baby is adjusting to life outside the womb with all it’s stimuli.

An organization like La Leche League is an invaluable resource to moms and new families when they are at their most vulnerable; stressed, sleep deprived, hormonal, and full of dreamy (often unrealistic!) expectations. I’ll never forget the immense amount of relief I felt, when my first born was just two days old, walking into a breastfeeding clinic and asking for help. It hurt. A lot. He fed non stop. I was exhausted; convinced that he wasn’t getting “enough” and I was starving him.

I can still feel the warmth of the breastfeeding consultants hand, as she reassuringly held my arm, telling me it would be ok, that this overwhelming soul-crushing pressure and fear and anxiety was completely normal. That together we’ll get his latch just right, and get my holding position just right so that my neck pain goes away. And literally within ten minutes, she worked miracles. I have to mention, that’s not everyone’s experience; it can take a few consultations to get it right. And the initial pain of one’s milk let down and baby latching can take weeks to go away, as it did for me. But you should see an improvement with the correct latching technique. I cannot recommend enough seeking out a breastfeeding consultant in those vital early days, when mom and baby are getting to know each other, and habits are being formed.

La Leche League Canada has an impressive range of services available, having doubled their community and health professional outreach in the last year alone. They’re working hard to improve access to much needed services, and by reaching out to healthcare professionals they are changing the culture around breastfeeding. Taken from their website:

“Over 385,000 babies are born in Canada each year and we want to ensure every parent has access to La Leche League Canada support whenever she/he needs it. We are working hard to grow and we need your support. Every donation helps us provide more support to more families!”
